Paul Zopf escaped with 3000 gulden stolen from the imperial cash box. Fleeing, he passed by the Trattler Inn and had a quick glass of wine, which he drank sitting in his saddle. The host recognized the impostor and sent a messenger to inform the local guards. Paul Zopf was arrested and later decapitated in Millstatt.
This story is the subject of an old painting in our Zopfstubn (Zopf lounge), which is named after the unmasked impostor. You can also see a hand carved wooden effigy of Paul Zopf in front of our hotel entrance.
