Together with Carinthian skiing greats such as Matthias Mayer and Fritz Strobl, and with musical accompaniment by the Kirchheimer Bauernmusik, former companions presented a laurel wreath—a warm sign of appreciation and a tribute to an Olympic triumph that continues to inspire Austria’s skiing story to this day.

Our ski emperor gets a sculpture!
Our ski emperor gets a sculpture!
Last week, just in time for the ski opening, the sculpture in honor of Franz Klammer was ceremoniously unveiled in Bad Kleinkirchheim.
The sculpture was designed by artist Egon Gruber. A square is also named after Franz Klammer!
Klammer and his extraordinary achievements are the foundation of a long-standing, close friendship with Carinthia and the town of Bad Kleinkirchheim - Bad Kleinkirchheim honors this deep connection with the Franz Klemmer sculpture on the future Franz-Klammer-Platz.
"It makes me proud that a downhill run was first named after me and that I am now being honored with the sculpture. Little Franz would never have thought of that back then," says Olympic champion Franz Klammer.

Franz Klammer: Legend, idol, Olympic champion, and film star
Franz Klammer won his first European Cup downhill in Bad Kleinkirchheim in 1971, at that time still on the well-known FIS K70 downhill course. It was in his honour that the now popular “Kärnten - Franz Klammer” World Cup downhill run, a black piste in the Bad Kleinkirchheim ski area, was created. The ski area in the south of Austria in Kärnten is the home of the once successful Ski Kaiser.
The moment when Franz Klammer made history and became Olympic champion in 1976 is now even material worthy of a feature film.
“Klammer - Chasing the line” is the most expensive Austrian cinema production of all time.
How it all started...
Franz Klammer was born the son of a simple family of mountain farmers in Mooswald in Kärnten on 3 December 1953. He was on skis from an early age and is still one of the most famous Austrian professional skiers today. In 1976 Franz Klammer became Olympic champion in the downhill. With 25 downhill victories and winning the Downhill World Cup five times, he is the most successful skier in this discipline in World Cup history.
Skiing career
There was no lift in his home town of Mooswald at the time. So he always had to trudge up the slopes on foot or take the bus to the nearest ski area, 30 kilometres away. Franz Klammer started racing at the age of 14 after it had become clear that he was always ahead of his friends in races. The then 18-year-old celebrated his first major success on 11 December 1971, when he won the European Cup downhill in Bad Kleinkirchheim. At the 1976 Olympic Games in Innsbruck, Franz Klammer won Olympic gold in the downhill at Patscherkofel.
Franz Klammer won all the classic downhill races, winning the Hahnenkamm race in Kitzbühel four times, the Lauberhorn race in Wengen three times, and the Saslong in Gröden four times. The famous Austrian celebrated his last World Cup victory in Kitzbühel in 1984. The “Downhill Kaiser” skied his last World Cup race in Aspen on 14 March 1985. On 20 April 1985, Franz Klammer announced his retirement after a successful career.
KLAMMER - CHASING THE LINE
5 February 1976 - This moment made history - and it is the type of story that has now even made cinema history!
The film focuses primarily on the days surrounding the downhill race at the 1976 Winter Olympics at Patscherkofel near Innsbruck and the pressure that weighed on the then 22-year-old downhill skier Franz Klammer.
Many props from the film production “Klammer - Chasing the line” can now be admired in countless locations in Bad Kleinkirchheim. The town is under the spell of a film and the retro look of the 1970s. Pure nostalgia with a smile factor!
