The most beautiful natural lakes for ice skating

Carinthia is known for its impressive natural lakes. In winter, they exert a very special fascination. Here you will find the best places for ice skating on natural lakes near the Trattlerhof.

Brennsee & Afritzer See

"Brennsee" is just 11 kilometers from the Trattlerhof. Afritzer See is also within easy reach at 14 kilometers. Both lakes are perfect destinations for ice skating enthusiasts. As soon as frost covers the lakes with a thick layer of ice, they blend perfectly into the glittering winter landscape. "Brennsee" in particular, which forms an impressive 30 cm thick layer of ice almost every winter, offers ideal conditions for ice skaters, curling enthusiasts, and even unusual activities such as ice surfing, ice sailing, and ice tennis. Best of all, ice skating on both lakes is free of charge.

Turracher See

The high alpine "Turracher See" lies at 1,780 meters above sea level and is 23 kilometers from the Trattlerhof. For up to six months of the year, the lake is covered by a thick layer of ice, providing a natural ice rink. Ice skating here is a special experience for young and old alike – glide across the smooth ice and enjoy the tranquility of the frozen lake surrounded by snow-covered mountains.

Aichwaldsee

"Aichwaldsee", 46 kilometers from the Trattlerhof, is a peaceful destination for ice skating enthusiasts. Here you can skate for free on a well-maintained ice rink, as admission and parking are provided by the market town of "Finkenstein am Faaker See". The lake is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and offers a relaxed atmosphere for young and old alike – perfect for a leisurely excursion into the Carinthian winter landscape.

Weißensee

52 kilometers from the Trattlerhof lies "Weissensee", Europe's largest frozen natural ice surface. With up to 25 kilometers of groomed tracks, a 400-meter track for speed skaters, and curling rinks, it offers perfect conditions for ice sports. From mid-December to early March, you can enjoy ice skating, speed skating, or horse-drawn sleigh rides here – an unforgettable experience in a dreamlike winter setting.

Lendkanal & Wörthersee

The historic "Lendkanal" in Klagenfurt invites you to enjoy a special ice skating experience. On the approximately 1.5-kilometer-long natural ice rink, maintained by the Wörthersee Ice Skating Club, you can enjoy winter sports right in the middle of the city. The unique backdrop of the canal, which was built in the 16th century, combines tradition and ice skating fun.

A trip to Klagenfurt can be ideally combined with a stroll through the city, where you can discover the charming provincial capital. And who knows – maybe there will be another rare opportunity to experience the frozen Wörthersee, which was last opened for ice skating in 2006. Distance to the Trattlerhof: just over 30 miles.

Ice rink in the "Kurpark Bad Kleinkirchheim" and near the sports arena

Just 700 meters from the Trattlerhof, the ice rink in "Kurpark Bad Kleinkirchheim", directly opposite the St. Kathrein thermal spa, invites you to enjoy winter ice skating fun. Thanks to artificial cooling, the 300 m² artificial ice rink provides perfect conditions throughout the winter – regardless of the weather. Particularly atmospheric: the lighting until 9:00 p.m., which makes the ice rink a great destination for the whole family in the evening as well. There is also an ice rink at the sports arena.

Nockhalle Radenthein - unfortunately temporarily closed

The "Nockhalle in Radenthein", just 7 kilometers from the Trattlerhof, would be ideally located for ice skating fun whatever the weather. Unfortunately, the rink will not be open this winter season due to high operating costs. However, there is still hope that it will reopen in the future. After all, it is an important sports facility for the entire region.

Eishalle Spittal an der Drau

The Spittal an der Drau ice rink, just 30 kilometers from the Trattlerhof, is a versatile destination for winter sports fans. In winter, the ice arena invites you to enjoy ice skating, curling, and exciting ice hockey games. Located right next to the city stadium and the "Drautalperle", a visit can be ideally combined with other activities. Whether you're active on the ice or watching thrilling tournaments as a spectator, the ice rink has something for everyone.
